ISIS has been developing world-class asset-tracking software from its headquarters in London, UK since 1996. They continue to deliver turnkey solutions for some of the world's largest organizations on time, and to budget.
The technical team, lead by Dr. Mark Winsall, developed the award-winning Aspects™ suite of products to track, protect and manage critical assets in real-time using active RFID technology. Asset tracking systems bolster efficiency, substantially reduce costs and manpower, and yield new information about business processes.
Business Challenge
In an effort to protect the sensitive information stored on portable devices, one of the world’s leading diamond distribution companies contracted ISIS to spearhead a security initiative to track and trace all laptops throughout their London offices. The facility extended to five separate buildings, spread over three city blocks, and included five main entrances, eight fire exits and one loading bay. The client also required a system that could be easily integrated with their existing access control system.
In the precious commodities industry, speculation on mineral deposits can elicit an immediate investor response, resulting in significant shifts in stock prices. A laptop containing trade secrets can have wide-ranging, market-impacting effects if it reaches the wrong hands. The customer required an extensive, accurate security system to implement throughout their facility. They needed to identify the location of laptops in real time and ensure that the devices were only accessed by authorised users.
Solution
ISIS implemented the Aspects solution. Active RFID tags, guarded with tamper and removal detection sensors, were fixed to all corporate laptops and non-mobile hardware. While RFID Floor Readers were strategically placed to monitor the status and location of tagged assets through the facility, portal readers covered each exit to detect when an asset attempting to leave.
The Aspects alarm screen displays text and graphic alerts revealing the nature of the infraction and delineates the precise location of the asset under threat. Pertinent data from the violation is simultaneously fed directly into the access control system to alert security officers stationed at remote entry/exit points. The result is a real-time response to an unauthorized removal of assets.
Detailed information for each incident, including the time, the portal where the laptop was detected, and the user to whom the laptop is registered, is automatically recorded in the Aspects event history, thus providing a thorough audit trail. For prevention of inappropriate usage within the facility, the asset tags were linked to a specific employees, equipped with an RFID tag badge. In this way, an ‘alert’ is flagged up in software when a laptop is detected in the possession of an unauthorised person.
ISIS provides the client with optimal radio coverage of their entire facility and continues to ensure that every laptop is accounted for, and no sensitive information is compromised.
Results
• Full perimeter coverage of the entire facility for zero laptop removal infractions
• Integration with existing access control software for real-time response to violations
• Associated asset tags and employee badges detect unauthorized usage of laptops
• Detailed event reporting for a thorough audit trail of laptop movement and possession
Comments
“Since the installation of our system, our client has been able to track all their laptops, without experiencing a single one go missing. With a click of a button, they can exactly locate a laptop anywhere within the building,” says Rob Green, Managing Director of ISIS
