Ethernet solution saves costs through existing transmission media

ComNet, a North American provider of fibre optic and Ethernet network solutions, has introduced a new model allowing Ethernet based equipment to be connected over non-traditional media. Its ComWorx CNFE1CL1MC accepts common 10/100TX Ethernet data and transports it over common 75ohm coaxial cable or twisted pair telephone wire.  The reported benefit is that in many installations CCTV cable or telephone twisted pair is already in place for surveillance cameras, camera control or telephone systems. By using ComWorx, existing 75ohm cable or UTP can transport Ethernet data from different security devices to a network.

Ethernet over coaxial cable or twisted pair also provides extended distances versus traditional Cat5/6 cable, the company adds. The system can extend distances between devices by up to 500m on coaxial cable or 3km on twisted pair, it's claimed. The output port is a standard BNC connector or terminal block and the input port is a standard RJ-45 connector.

This Ethernet device is designed to operate in environments where extremes in temperature and vibration are a consideration.  "ComWorx was initiated to control costs by enabling utilising existing media for an Ethernet network", explains Vic Milani, ComNet Vice President of Product Management. "Our customers were telling us that in many instances where additions and improvements were being made, there were legacy CCTV or phone systems already in place. This solution allows perfectly good transmission media to be used instead of incurring the expense of installing an all new traditional Ethernet media".
