Verint’s Nextiva Transit video security for Vancouver buses

As the city currently hosting the Winter Olympics, Vancouver has also recently seen the installation of video security technology on-board its fixed route bus fleet. Supplied by Verint Systems Inc, the company's Nextiva Transit networked IP video system is designed to help enhance passenger and operator safety and security.

Supplied to Translink, Vancouver's regional transportation authority, Nextiva Transit has been installed on 228 trolley buses and automatically uploads video from TransLink's buses to its central monitoring system. "This technology will not only help enhance safety and security by deterring onboard incidents, it will also enable us to provide video support when needed to quickly investigate claims and support law enforcement when prosecution instances occur," says Ward Clapham, Chief Officer, Chief Officer of TransLink Transit Police.

Verint adds that its networked video solution provides a reliable, scalable and flexible platform to focus on passenger and driver security. The system allows TransLink to manage video across its onboard network, with automatic system health monitoring, camera tampering detection and proactive problem notification.

The installation is the first part of a planned, multi-phase deployment for TransLink, which serves 21 municipalities in the greater Vancouver region using 1432 buses, two passenger ferries and five commuter rail trains. The network is expected to deliver an estimated one million rides a day during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
